Our School
Welcome to Beacon Hill International School!
BHIS provides an inclusive, globally-oriented education, and offers two language options: Spanish immersion and Mandarin immersion. All students spend half their day in their target language (Spanish or Mandarin), and half their day in English.
What makes BHIS an international school?
- Language immersion
- Families and students with backgrounds from around the world
- ELL (English Language Learners): We are proud to have a high population of ELL students. We know that being multilingual is an asset that builds strong academics and community.
- At BHIS, literacy and writing are taught in English. Math, science, and integrated literacy are taught in Mandarin or Spanish depending on what program your child is in.
Our School Values
I am Safe. I am Kind. I am Responsible.
Our School Motto
Multilingualism is our superpower.
Our Building
Open Concept
The school building was designed in the Open Concept method that fosters teacher collaboration and cross-age instruction. Classrooms are grouped into Pods, and there are few walls and doors in the building. Students and teachers work hard to keep noise disruptions to a minimum, and follow these hallway and classroom guidelines:
- Level 1 silence
- Level 2 whisper
- Level 3 group work
- Level 4 outside voice
- Level 5 emergency voice
Pods
Classrooms are grouped into clusters, or Pods. Students typically move from their “homeroom” morning pod to their afternoon pod before lunch.
- K Pod – Kindergarten & 1st Grade
- A Pod – K/1 Mandarin & Spanish Immersion
- B Pod – 2nd Grade/3rd Grade
- C Pod – 4th/5th Grade Spanish and Mandarin Immersion
- D Pod – 4th Grade/5th Grade
- E Pod – 2nd/3rd Grade Spanish and Mandarin Immersion
Building Security
We all want to provide our students with safe learning environments.
- All school doors remain locked during school hours 8:00 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.
- All visitors, please enter through the front door at the main office.
- Staff and students are NOT allowed to open doors for visitors.
To enter the school building:
- Ring the bell located to the right of the front doors on 14th Ave. South.
- While facing the bell, identify yourself to the front desk staff.
- Sign in at the front office and wear a visitor sticker or badge if you are going to stay in the building.
- Sign out when you leave.
- Please do not ask students or teachers to let you in through other doors of the building. It is against school policy.

Every Family Should Complete the CNEEB Application
Free meals are available to all SPS students, but every family is encouraged to complete the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit application (CNEEB). Family responses help schools receive important funding and resources, and the application may qualify students for additional educational benefits. Families who do not wish to provide income information may select the “Decline Benefits” option.
Parking
The Beacon Hill Community is all aware of how challenging our morning drop off is with limited neighborhood parking and no drop off loop to use.
In response, a parent-school-city partnership has been working since 2022 to see how we could address this issue with the support of SDOT. Thanks to some very passionate family and community members, there have been the introduction of speed cushions on 14th avenue!
In order to better support the safety of students getting to school in the mornings, we are introducing a limited one-way street loop surrounding Beacon Hill for a drop off period in the morning. From 7:30am-8:05am, the streets surrounding Beacon Hill will create a one way loop and there will be a no waiting pull over area on 13th avenue for dropping off students near the courtyard.
Schedule
School Hours: 7:55 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.
Early Release every Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.
Start of School Day – 7:55 a.m.
-
*Please do not drop your child(ren) off unattended before 7:35 a.m.
-
Students who eat breakfast may be dropped off in the back courtyard area (near the cafeteria and the “kiss and ride” drop off zone) as early as 7:35am. If students are not eating breakfast, we encourage families to bring students close to the first bell at 7:50 because of limited supervision. Families are welcome to wait with students in the courtyard.
-
When the school bell rings, students will enter school and go to their assigned classrooms.
- Kindergarten parents are welcome to walk their students into the building with the teachers when they call for classes. Families will bring students in, help them get acclimated, and leave shortly after the bell. We ask that only kindergarten parents walk students to school, in order to limit non-staff members in the building during the morning rush.
End of school Day – 2:25 p.m. (1:10 p.m. every Wednesday)
- The final bell on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and the first day of school is 2:25 pm. School ends at 1:10 on Wednesdays (except the first day of school). Students in grades 1-5 will meet families on the upper field in labeled areas for each class. Please be sure to speak to your student’s teacher to check them out. This will take longer on the first few days of school as our teachers learn students’ families.
- Kindergarten families should meet their students at the side door entrance off Hill Street (Launch entrance). Families will go into the kindergarten classrooms to pick up their students.
- If you are more than 10 minutes late, your child will be waiting in the front office for you.
